National Events
OVERVIEW
University Sport South
Africa (USSA) has complete
control and jurisdiction
over all student sport
events and tournaments
organised under its
auspices. Tournaments are
organised annually in those
sports for which a
recognised National
University Sports
Association (NUSA) exist.
The NUSA is responsible for
the administration,
organisation and
coordination of its own
sporting activities on a
national and provincial
basis.
USSA events and tournaments
are closed events for member
institutions of USSA. Only
bona fide students
registered with a club of a
member institution may
participate in tournaments
and activities of USSA, FISU,
FASU and/or CUCSA. A bona
fide student is defined as a
person who is:
-
officially registered
for a full time accredited
higher education course of
study with a tertiary
education institution
recognised by the Higher
Education Qualifications
Council (HEQC) and the
National Department of
Education in order to obtain
a degree, diploma or
certificate of such an
institution – excludes
students enrolled for short
courses;
-
actively involved in
pursuing his/her academic
career, i.e. attending
lectures, submitting
assignments, writing tests
and examinations in order to
be promoted to the next
level of study.
Institutions and/or
provinces must certify in
advance that all the members
of their respective teams
are bona fide students and
that they comply with all
the above-mentioned
regulations. The Registrar
(or his/her appointed
representative who may not
be a sports administration
employee) of the relevant
institution, must personally
sign the necessary entry
forms. The
above-mentioned restriction
is only applicable for
official USSA tournaments
and does not include
inter-tertiary tournaments
between two separate
institutions (e.g.
intervarsities). Such
tournaments are seen as a
domestic matter between the
two institutions concerned
and do not fall within the
jurisdiction of USSA.
A NUSA may not organise more
than one (1) types of
tournament in a specific
year, unless sponsored. USSA
national teams for
participation in approved
continental and
international events, are
selected at national
tournaments.
