The USSA Softball Ladies have achieved their desired results when they overcome Western Province 2-1 in the SA Softball National Championships on Saturday night (25 March 2017).
The team has perfomed fairly well through out the week and only lost to Western Province in the group stages 8-1 of which they went on to meet again in the finals where the USSA Team became overall winners. Ahead of the Championships the Gauteng and Eastern Cape ladies were favourite due to recent performances in domestic leagues.
The entire ladies team worked hard, a total of three regional camps were organised and the 10 year drought for USSA Softball ladies was finally over on Saturday evening according to Head Coach Raymond Matlala. As the competition progressed, no one belived the performance displayed by the USSA Softball Ladies Team, the influence of Ms. Nomsa Mabuza a student from VUT proved to be what was needed as she is an integral team member of the SA National Team that competes in World Series events over the past years.
At the conclusion of the tournament a total of four ladies namely; Nomsa Mabuza, Nomsa Jwara, Cassandra Kalpen and Valemerie de Lange have been selected as part of the SA Senior Women team for World Softball Series in Canada later in the year. For the first time in many years the USSA Team Coach has been appointed as the Assistant Coach of the SA Softbal Senior Ladies Team.
At the individual prize giving ceremony Ms. Orabetse Mojeremane was awarded as the best pitcher and Rachel Mabitsela was an alternative player for the selected World Series Team.
