UP-Tuks Triumphs at USSA Swimming Champs 2024
The highly anticipated USSA Swimming Championships returned to the Tuks Aquatics
Centre at the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) this past weekend, delivering two
days of exciting swimming action. 170 swimmers from 10 universities across South
Africaparticipated in the event.
UP-Tuks dominated the Championships, claiming the overall Championship title
with a commanding combined score of 1439.5 points. Stellenbosch University (Maties)
followed in second place with 934.5 points, while IIE Varsity College took third
with 863 points.
“This year’s USSA Swimming Championship was a great success,” says Carole Adam,
USSA Aquatic. “It was great to see so many first-time swimmers in action,
especially WITS returning after a long absence. We congratulate UP-Tuks on their
outstanding performance and look forward to welcoming even more swimmers to next
year’s event”.
Women’s Competition
In the women’s competition, UP-Tuks led the way, finishing with an impressive
723 points. Maties came second with 451 points, and the University of the Free
State rounded out the top three with 449 points.
Men’s Competition
The men’s competition was equally thrilling, with UP-Tuks once again taking
first place, amassing 635.5 points. Varsity College secured second place with
530 points, and Maties finished third with 419.5 points.
Standout Performances
Several swimmers put on standout performances, securing their places on the
USSA’sChampionships Team with 700+ individual points. The swimmers who qualified
for the team are:

• Henre Louw (UP-Tuks)

Top Male Swimmers:
1. Chase Rayment (UKZN) – 93 points
2. Righardt Muller (Varsity College) – 88 points
3. Joshua Ashley (Varsity College) – 86 points
Top Female Swimmers:
1. Catherine Van Rensburg (UP-Tuks) – 104 points
2. Kate Meye (UP-Tuks) – 97 points
3. Lize-Mari (UFS) – 94 points
Most Valuable Players
• Male MVP: Benjamin Plattner (UP-Tuks) achieved the highest World Aquatics
points in a single event, with an impressive time of 54.6 seconds in the Men’s
100-meter butterfly.
• Female MVP: Hannah Pearse (UP-Tuks) secured the highest World Aquatics points
in the Women’s 200-meter backstroke.

The USSA Swimming Championships followed Swimming South Africa and World
Aquatics regulations, with swimmers competing in up to six individual events and
up to 14 events total, including relays. Points were awarded for the top 16
finishes in each event, with relay results contributing double points.
