Grow Student Football Guided by Vision 2022 of SAFA

The University Sport South Africa football (USSA football) workshop held on 11 August 2018 at the South African Football Association (SAFA) house was a resounding success. The main purpose of the workshop was to have a systematic review and plan for the next three years of executive committee mandate.

The workshop’s foundation was built on four pillars namely, football model; marketing and communication; events and tournaments; and lastly, football, our business. The current executive committee acknowledges and appreciates the significant role played by the previous committee. The workshop’s main objective was to sustain what worked previously as well as consolidating established systems and structures.

The event’s participants were an amalgamation of former and current executive committee members as well a number of football industry experts. The workshop resolved to emphasise a balance between education and football for student-athletes, to strengthen the foundation of football on campuses i.e. allowing for increased playing opportunities for students through internal and residential league participation; the staging of quality tournaments and events (USSA tournaments need to be of a higher quality and standard with members being given equal opportunities to compete). Another matter of importance is competitiveness so that a respectful rank is reached on continental and international ranking scales.

The product (USSA) needs to be taken out into the market through effective marketing and communication; sound administration and proper governance of football is yet another matter that is to be tackled. To have an events calendar that’s aligned with SAFA’s calendar is another critical matter to be resolved as well as working closely with SAFA, with it being the mother body.

A fruitful and constructive meeting with the CEO of SAFA, Mr. Dennis Mumble, who presented a SAFA 2022 Vision to the USSA executive committee took place the day before the workshop. With the foundation laid and a way forward sketched out, it follows that university sport will take huge leaps into the future and competitiveness raised to the next degree.
