USSA 2019 AGM, a success
City of Tshwane - Delegates from the various member institutions converged to
the City of Tshwane to attend a series of meetings hosted by the University of
Sport South Africa (USSA) over the past weekend.
The formalities kicked-off at the University of Pretoria (UP) Sports Campus on
Friday, 12 April 2019, with the Heads of Sport Forum. It was chaired by Ms.
Yoliswa Lumka, who is a co-opted USSA National Executive Committee (NEC) member
and Director of Sport at Nelson Mandela University (NMU); the Students Forum,
which runs parallel to the Heads of Sport Forum, chaired by Mr Rodwell Ndlovu, 2nd
Vice-President in the NEC and University of Western Cape (UWC) student. Ndlovu
was thoroughly impressed by the calibre of student leaders that were present at
the Students Forum.
“Everyone in the forum contributed to the progressive and productive discussion.
An action plan has been mapped and we’re excited for the programmes that lie
ahead”, the student President said.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on the Saturday of 13 April 2019, at
the CSIR International Convention Centre. The sitting was chaired by USSA
President and University of Stellenbosch Chief Director of Sport, Mrs. Ilhaam
Groenewald who’s address centred around the themes of governance, leadership and
management. She also spoke about the upcoming USSA 25th anniversary
celebrations which will coincide with the USSA Council in October 2019 in Nelson
Mandela Bay.
The upcoming 30th Summer Universiade scheduled to take place in
Napoli, Italy, on 3-14 July 2019 was discussed at length by the house, with Chef
de Mission, Mr. Mandla Gagayi, Director of Sport at UWC, providing feedback from
their Napoli site inspection.
Chief Financial and Marketing Officer of the NEC and Director of
Sport at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Mr. Shadrack Nthangeni,
with Mr. Louis Nel, USSA Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General, took the
members through the financial performance and standing of the organisation.
Groenewald concluded the AGM by reminding members of their primary task of
holding the NEC accountable for the performance of the organisation and further
thanked them for their continuous support.
“As the NEC, we still want to achieve so much more before our term
ends; a lot of progress has been made by this committee thus far and we need to
share these good practices on all fronts”, said USSA President.
