How USSA celebrated its 25th anniversary
Not only did our beloved South Africa celebrate 25 years of democracy, University Sport South Africa (USSA) joined in with the festivities as it also commemorated 25 years of excellence in university sport this year.
On Saturday, 12 October 2019, USSA held its annual council meeting where the outgoing President, Ilhaam Groenwald, said her goodbye to the office she served from 2017 - 2019. She said that there are some key issues facing university sport in the country and these includes; governance, leadership development and a shared vision. She noted that the incoming national executive committee should be aware of these issues as they take up office.
The new National Executive Committee (NEC) was voted in by member institutions and the outcome was as follows:
President: Nomsa Mahlangu 1st Vice-President: Mandla Gagayi 2nd Vice-President: Lindokuhle Zwane CFO and Marketing Officer: Shadrack Nthangeni Assessors: Thabiso Letselebe, Yoliswa Lumka, Thobani Zikhali, Tholoana Peu and Thabo Moilwa
Later that evening USSA held the 25th Celebration at Nelson Mandela University (NMU). It was all glitz and glamour on the evening and the announcement of the 5 category winners for Best Performing USSA Sports Association 2017/2019, Active Student Serving in NUSA or Nec 2017/2019, Best Performing Sports Administrator/Official 2017/2019, Male Sports Star of the 2017/2019 Season and Female Sports Star of the 2017/2019 Season took place.
Winners: Best Performing USSA Sports Association: Netball Active Student Serving in NUSA or NEC: Gordon Dodge Best Performing Sports Administrator/Official: Riana Benzenhout Male Sports Star of the 2017/2019 Season: Milton Kekana Female Sports Star of the 2017/2019 Season: Tatjana Schoenmaker
USSA would like to thank everyone that has been part of its 25 years of existence; without dedicated members of the sporting community these past 25 years would not have been a success. We look to the next 25 years and taking South African university sport to the next level!
