TUKS Dominate the Swimming Championship
This past weekend, Nelson Mandela University hosted the 2023 Swimming
Championships at the Newton Park Swimming Complex. The excitement around the
complex was titillating, with Nine universities competing in the Championship.
The Chairperson of the USSA Swimming Board, Carol Adams, indicated that it is
always exciting to see the best in each university competing against each other,
" It is fantastic to have these types of tournaments each other because it is
one of the cornerstones in identifying potential swimmers for the country" said
Adams. Adams indicated that it is also vital that USSA swimming works with many
partners around universities in initiatives that will bring together students
and communities around the country, promoting swimming and seeking talent.
Petrus Truter had the most points produced for Maties with a massive 103 points.
Truter ability to do both long and short-distance freestyle events and also be
part of the Relay team made him earn the Victor Ladorum Award for Top Male
Individual, "I am extremely happy for this award, and I am happy that I
contributed to the team as well, we put in a lot of hard work in preparing for
this and the hours as well in the swimming pool, but I believe we can still get
even better"said Truter. Another swimmer who performed well was Kaydn Naidoo of
Varsity College, who returned recently from the World Students Games in Chengdu.
Naidoo was left mesmerized by the experience and still wants more, "It was a
beautiful time in Chengdu, especially the opening ceremony, but right now I am
preparing for the Olympics qualification... In a nutshell, I want to be part of
the Olympics" said Naidoo with a smile. Naidoo was also in the Top Three in the
total culminated points in the championship, which made him catch many people
attention and recognition.
TUKS (University of Pretoria) also had the largest squad in the championships,
which helped them get many points. This resulted in TUKS winning the
Championship with a mammoth score of 1404 points, their ability to compete in
almost all the events and high rate of podium finishes earned the right to be
named USSA Swimming Championships. Maties (University of Stellenbosch) finished
second, closely with a score of 1082, then Varsity College came third with a
score of 810.
