University Sport South Africa Signs Landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the China Student Sports Federation
University Sport South Africa (USSA) has officially entered into a historic partnership with the China Student Sports Federation (CSSF) following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 03 December 2025 in Beijing, China. The signing took place during The 4th Meeting of the South Africa–China High−Level People−to−People Exchange Mechanism, underscoring both nations’ commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in youth and university sports.
The MOU was signed by Mr Jerry Laka, President of USSA, and Mr Chen Dongsheng, Chief of the CSSF.
Strengthening Bilateral Sports Relations
The agreement reflects the growing prominence of both South Africa and China in the global sports landscape and reaffirms the shared commitment to fostering people−to−people ties through sport. The partnership aims to enhance cooperation in university sports, promote cultural exchange, and create meaningful development opportunities for student−athletes, coaches, and sports administrators.
Speaking at the ceremony, USSA President Matsobane Lewatle Jerry highlighted the significance of the collaboration:
“This agreement marks an important step in expanding South Africa’s international university sports footprint. Through this partnership, we aim to open new pathways for our student−athletes and strengthen global understanding through sport. We look forward to working closely with CSSF Chief Mr Chen Dongsheng and his team. This collaboration presents a unique opportunity to enhance competitive and developmental prospects for students in both countries, while also deepening the friendship between our nations through meaningful exchanges.”
Key Areas of Cooperation
The MOU establishes a framework for ongoing collaboration between USSA and CSSF. Both organizations will work together to promote university sports, facilitate exchanges for student−athletes, coaches, and administrators, and encourage shared learning and development in sport. The partnership provides opportunities for engagement through joint initiatives, events, and programs that strengthen ties between the two countries and foster the growth of university sports.
